On the morning of September 27th, at 0629 hours, the Niantic and Flanders fire departments were dispatched to 55 West Main st., The Thames Import Co. for a reported structure fire. First arriving units found the structure pushing heavy smoke, and went to work. The probable cause was an unattended candle in the first floor bathroom. The structure had heavy fire damage to the first floor, communicating to the second floor and roof.

Flanders District, At 2156hrs B-200, 27, 21 & Med 11 responded to a on car rollover I-95 S/B Between 74-73. A tractor trailer had clipped the rear end of a mid size p/u causing it to rollover down the embankment. 1 Patient was transported to L&M BLS.

Niantic District, At 2217hrs the Niantic & Flanders Dept. responded to a possible structure fire, reported smoke coming from a bedroom. When the first engine arrived they transmitted a working fire. While initial crews knocked down fire in the 2nd floor kitchen they were hampered by the living conditions of the house to make their way to the main body of fire in the rear bedroom. The decision was then made to make an aggressive attack through the windows of the bedroom. The main body of fire was knocked down shortly after with extension into the attic. Flanders District, Around 550am B-200, 21, 27 & B-100 responded to a two car MVA on I-95 Between Exits 74 & 73. 2 Patients were transported to L&M.

Flanders District, Around 10:20am The Flanders Fire Dept. responded to a reported tractor trailer rollover on I-95 in the vicinity of exit 75. Upon arrival crews found 1 T/T Unit (which was traveling Northbound) on the median guardrails leaking diesel fuel product from several compromises within the tank. Approx 6,000 gallons was lost in the incident. The tanker unit was detached from tractor. The tractor collided with southbound vehicles which included another T/T Unit along with 4 passenger cars. Unfortunately 3 people were pronounced deceased at the scene, while 3 people were transported to hospital with various injuries. Interstate 95 was completely closed to all traffic in this area for approx.12 hours. Also assisting the Flanders Fire Department with this incident were the Niantic FD, Cohanzie FD, Jordan FD, Oswegatchie FD, Goshen FD, Quaker Hill FD, SubBase FD, Oakdale FD, Gardner Lake FD, Pfizer FD, Norwich FD, Old Lyme FD, Willington FD, Canteen Unit, DEP, DOT, and Coast Guard. The scene was cleared by the Fire Departments at 2000hrs however DEP & DOT remainedon scene for several more hours. Photos by FMO, & other contributors.

Niantic District, On November 1st @ 0057 hrs. the Niantic Fire Dept. responded to the report of a one car motor vehicle accident on Rt 156 @ Fairhaven road. Upon arrival Deputy Chief Barone reported one car into a tree. Niantic Engines 1, 3, Rescue 1, and the Ambulance responded. Lifestar was put on standby due to the extent of damage done to the vehicle, but was later canceled after assessment of the lone patient.It took crews approximately 10 minutes to extricate the patient. Old Lyme, @1447hrs B-11,200,27,Med-11, & Old Lyme units responded to a 1 car rollover on I-95 Between Exits 70 & 71. On arrival units found that a teenage driver was traveling Northbound when she lost control of her SUV and rolled it several times into the Southbound lanes. She was transported to L&M.

Niantic District, @ 0937hrs B-13,15, 22, & B-1,& 2 responded to a kitchen fire at Constantines Rest. the fire was knocked down with an extinguisher and units were released.

Niantic HQ, At approximately 0930 hrs Firefighter Pierangelo, working a cover shift, decided to run the pump on Engine B-13. He had the engine pulled onto the brow in front of the bay with the rear preconnects off. When he charged the disconnected line it shot across the bay directly into the Chiefs office, filling the office with roughly 50 gallons of water before he realized what happened. FF Pierangelo then proceeded to clean the Chiefs office. The Chief is extending Pierangelo's services out to area fire depts. You need only supply the equipment. Congratulations Mikey on a job well done!

Niantic District, B-13,12,15,17,B-100 & B22 Responded to working fire @ 29 S. Washington Ave around 0453hrs this morning. One person and 2 dogs were reported trapped on the roof. Upon arrival a 2ND Alarm was transmitted B-11,B-21, B-25, Tribal Fast Team, & Jordan W-12, & W-11 were added to the assignment. Units from Oswegatchie and Goshen back filled East Lyme's stations. The victim was transported to L&M. The residence on the Bravo exposure also caught fire from the 1st residence.

On arrival found one SUV had struck a tree on the front lawn of 48 Larual Hill Dr. One occupant was transported. Police investigation proved that vehicle involved in accident was taken w/out owners permission.

Niantic District, 6:44 am B-13, B-100 responded in the area of 315 Main St. for a working car fire. The owner was driving eastbound on Rt 156. (on his way to work) while sitting at intersection of E. Patt. he noticed a smoke odor in the vehicle. He continued on until he noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment.
